My hours are being cut back!!!!

OK, I probably shouldn't be happy about this, and truth be told I'm not uber thrilled. I would have preferred being laid off because then I could draw more EI than I'll be getting paid in the new year, but being cut back means more to time to play with yarn and more motivation to design and sell patterns because playing with yarn costs money. And let's face it, if my hours are being cut back then things really suck in the wild world of beauty school, so maybe this is the push from the universe that I need to diversify.

Silver linings, man, silver linings. From anarchy comes tranquility and zen.

E is for Experimenting

Ever since I made my first sweater as a child, I have rarely followed a pattern. Even though many of my early experiments ended up being ripped out, I have always had more fun saying to myself "What if (fill in the blank here)". This is how I learned to design from scratch.

I mostly stick to the rule of making a tension sample before I begin, especially if I am working with a textured yarn. (Well, I should say that I stick to it now...spending hours of knitting misshapen objects gets tired). So, make a swatch, do some quick math and have yourself some fun!

Dare to dream

You know, I love teaching trade school, but I think if my boss was to say "I'm laying you off" I would dance all the way from downtown to home. Nothing would please me more than to spend the most miserable winter months that Manitoba has to offer, locked up in my house, with a truckload of yarn, a pot of tea, and all the time in the world to make patterns.

Oh yeah. If I could do nothing but crochet and knit I would be so there. It's funny - I wonder if the scrapbookers and stampers and beaders feel the same as the hookers and chicks with sticks.

Blowing the dust off this blog!!!

How neglectful I've been of my blog here:(

I moved my old sock blog to wordpress because I heard that is where all the coffee-shop-cool cats were....really, I just liked the backdrop theme I could get there more than what I had with blogger and I'm too much of a technotard to figure out how to do my own CSS.

I picked up some Lana Grossa Solo and a skein of really juicy lace weight yarn by Tanis Fibre Arts. One day I'll get brave enough to say, "Hi, I'm a strange sockwhore who blogs about your store." :)

I was approached by a crochet webzine to start putting my patterns with them which was a total Squee!!!! moment for me. I forget that people actually pay attention to my stuff online.

D is for Dyeing

We had a riot yesterday in the shop playing with food colouring. I had no idea how easy this is!
For every 100g skein, use 1 litre of hot water and about 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Drop in some food colouring and put a skein of soaking wet yarn in for about 20 mins. You can use the skein to stir the colour up. Then rinse and take the yarn wrapped in plastic wrap and put it in a microwave for about a minute until it's piping hot. Hang to dry!
We used bleached white Selkirk and experimented with wicking two colours and tie dyeing. I'm going to make some mittens with mine!

Knitting and Crochet instructors

For the EDGE program I did get a response from one interested person for teaching knitting in the Seven Oaks School District but have not heard back yet and would like to speak with her. I am needing more instructors as I have 8 schools who would be interested. If anyone would like to pass on the love of knitting and/or crochet call me as soon as possible at my office number 885-4333 (you can leave a message if I am out of the office) as the fall program needs to be set by next week. Hope to hear from more knitters soon!
